President Approves Waqf (Amendment) Bill Amid Legal, Political Pushback

The Waqf (Amendment) Bill received presidential assent today

New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu has given her assent to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, officially enacting it into law following its passage in both houses of Parliament amid intense debate.

The legislation, which aims to curb favouritism, prevent misuse of Waqf properties, and stop encroachments on Waqf assets, has been defended by the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) as a necessary reform and “not anti-Muslim” in nature.

The WAQF (AMENDMENT) ACT, 2025.

The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Thursday with 288 votes in favour and 232 against. In the Rajya Sabha, it secured 128 votes in support and 95 in opposition. The amendment follows six months of deliberation, including the recommendations of a joint parliamentary committee.

However, the new law has been challenged in the Supreme Court through separate petitions filed by Congress MP Mohammad Jawed, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, and AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan. The petitioners argue that the law is discriminatory against Muslims and violates fundamental rights.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has also opposed the Act, announcing a nationwide campaign aimed at "countering misinformation" and promoting "peaceful activism."
