UGC Launches Campaign to Engage Higher Educational Institutions in the Fight Against Tuberculosis
Training Sessions and Ni-kshay Mitra Initiative to be Promoted Across Campuses

New Delhi, April 2025:
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has called upon Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) across India to actively participate in the national movement to eliminate tuberculosis (TB). In a powerful campaign titled "Join the Fight to End Tuberculosis", the UGC emphasizes the need for awareness, early detection, and collective responsibility in the battle against this infectious disease.

Focus on Training for Staff and Students

As part of this initiative, HEIs are encouraged to organize dedicated training sessions for both staff and student volunteers. These sessions aim to educate participants about:

  • TB prevention strategies
  • Identification of symptoms
  • Timely medical intervention
  • Information on available treatment facilities

These proactive steps will ensure that campus communities are well-informed and capable of recognizing and responding to TB cases at an early stage.

Promotion of Ni-kshay Mitra Initiative

The campaign also urges institutions to promote the Ni-kshay Mitra Initiative, a government-backed program encouraging individuals to support TB patients. Under this initiative, students and staff can become Ni-kshay Mitras and provide essential support to patients through:

  • Nutritional assistance
  • Emotional and psychological counseling
  • Vocational training and skill development

By adopting TB patients and contributing in meaningful ways, HEIs can become instrumental in transforming lives and accelerating India's journey toward a TB-free nation.

Early Detection Saves Lives

The UGC stresses the importance of early detection, reminding everyone that “Early detection saves lives. Get tested, get treated, stop TB.” The campaign's call to action places educational institutions at the heart of community-driven healthcare awareness and intervention.

UGC’s Appeal to HEIs

The University Grants Commission believes that the large network of students, faculty, and academic leaders across the country can create a formidable force in spreading TB awareness, eliminating stigma, and providing grassroots-level support to patients.
