NMC Clarifies NEET UG 2025 Eligibility for Open and Private Candidates

NEET UG 2025 Registration Open, Exam Scheduled for May 4

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a clarification regarding the eligibility of students who have completed their Class 12 education through open schooling or private modes. In response to an RTI query dated February 11, 2025, the NMC addressed the confusion surrounding the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) NEET UG 2025 information bulletin. The commission clarified that students who have completed their education through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), state open schools, or private modes are eligible to appear for the NEET UG exam under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (GMER) 2023.

NMC Allows Additional Subjects via NIOS

Additionally, the NMC stated that students are permitted to study an extra subject via NIOS, provided it is undertaken through a recognized institution. This clarification aims to eliminate doubts regarding eligibility and ensure that aspiring medical students do not face unnecessary hurdles in their NEET UG applications.

NEET UG 2025 Registration and Exam Details

The NTA commenced the online registration process for NEET UG 2025 on February 7 at neet.nta.nic.in. Candidates can apply until March 7, 2025. The entrance exam will be conducted in offline mode using an OMR sheet on May 4, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

NEET UG 2025 serves as the gateway for admissions to MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BUMS, BSMS, BHMS, and Bachelor of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH) courses in medical institutions across India.

Foreign MBBS Aspirants Must Clear NEET

The Supreme Court has upheld the Medical Council of India’s (MCI) regulation requiring students aspiring to pursue MBBS abroad to qualify for NEET UG before seeking admission to foreign medical colleges. This ruling reinforces the necessity of clearing NEET UG for all medical aspirants, irrespective of whether they plan to study in India or abroad.

NEET UG 2025 Exam Pattern and Tie-Breaking Criteria Updated

For NEET UG 2025, the NTA has introduced changes in the exam pattern, timing, and tie-breaking rules. Previously, there were seven tie-breaking criteria, but this year, an eighth rule has been added. If a tie still persists after applying the first seven criteria, the NTA will resolve it through a random selection process under the guidance of an independent expert committee.

Revised Tie-Breaking Criteria for NEET UG 2025

  1. Higher Marks in Biology (Botany & Zoology) – Candidates scoring higher in Biology will be ranked higher.
  2. Higher Marks in Chemistry – If the tie remains, Chemistry marks will be considered.
  3. Higher Marks in Physics – If the tie still exists, Physics marks will determine the rank.
  4. Fewer Incorrect Answers – Candidates with fewer incorrect responses will be ranked higher.
  5. Lower Incorrect-to-Correct Ratio in Biology – A lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers in Biology will be considered.
  6. Lower Incorrect-to-Correct Ratio in Chemistry – If needed, the same method will be applied to Chemistry.
  7. Lower Incorrect-to-Correct Ratio in Physics – The Physics ratio will be used if the tie still remains.
  8. Random Selection Process – If all seven criteria fail to break the tie, the NTA will implement a random selection method under expert supervision.

With these clarifications and updates, NEET UG 2025 aspirants now have a clearer understanding of their eligibility and exam policies. Students from open schools and private candidates can confidently apply, knowing that they meet the NMC’s eligibility criteria. Additionally, the revised tie-breaking rules ensure a fair ranking system for all candidates.
