The University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken strict action against three universities in Rajasthan, barring them from admitting Ph.D. scholars for the next five academic years, from 2025-26 to 2029-30.
Standing Committee Report Highlights Violations
According to a public notice issued by the UGC on January 16, 2025, a Standing Committee was constituted to monitor whether universities were following the UGC Ph.D. Regulations. Upon evaluation, the committee found that three universities had failed to comply with these regulations and the prescribed academic norms for awarding Ph.D. degrees. Despite being given an opportunity to explain their non-compliance, the responses from these universities were deemed unsatisfactory.
Affected Universities
The UGC has directed the following universities to immediately discontinue enrolling Ph.D. students:
1. OPJS University, Churu, Rajasthan
2. Sunrise University, Alwar, Rajasthan
3. Shri Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University, Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan
Advisory to Students and Parents
The UGC has also advised prospective students and their parents not to enroll in Ph.D. programs offered by these universities. The notice emphasizes that in the absence of UGC approval, Ph.D. degrees awarded by these institutions will not be recognized for higher education or employment purposes.
Commitment to Upholding Standards
The UGC's decision reflects its commitment to ensuring academic integrity and maintaining the quality of research in higher education institutions. This move is part of the Commission’s broader effort to hold universities accountable and enforce compliance with established regulations.
