Major Overhaul in B.Ed Program: One-Year Course to Make a Comeback
NCTE Approves One-Year B.Ed Course After a Decade, Starting from 2025
Two-Year B.Ed Program to End by 2030: Major Reforms Announced by NCTE
National Education Policy 2020 Drives Major B.Ed Reforms
After a decade, the B.Ed course is set to undergo a significant change, with the reintroduction of the one-year B.Ed program starting in 2025. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has approved this decision along with several reforms in teaching courses in alignment with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
One-Year B.Ed to Replace Two-Year Program
The one-year B.Ed course was discontinued in 2014, with the final batch completing their studies in 2015. However, NCTE’s recent Governing Body meeting approved the revival of the program under new regulations. According to these reforms, only students who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or a postgraduate degree will be eligible for the one-year B.Ed program.
Additionally, NCTE has decided to phase out the two-year B.Ed course entirely by 2030. From 2024 onwards, no new admissions will be permitted for the two-year program.
Specialized Teacher Education in Yoga, Sanskrit, Performing Arts Introduced
New Specialized Streams in ITEP
The four-year Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) introduced earlier is already operational in 64 institutions across India. In Bihar, four institutions currently offer this program, allowing students to specialize in subjects of their choice.
The ITEP now includes specialized streams such as:
Yoga Education
Physical Education
Sanskrit
Performing Arts Education
The ITEP provides a dual integrated graduation degree, such as BA-B.Ed, BSc-B.Ed, or BCom-B.Ed, ensuring a holistic and comprehensive teacher education framework.
Fee Reduction Expected for One-Year B.Ed
The reintroduction of the one-year B.Ed program is expected to lower costs for students. Currently, the two-year B.Ed program costs between ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakh in private colleges, whereas government institutions charge lower fees. The one-year program will make teacher education more affordable and accessible.
New Regulations Approved
NCTE’s Governing Body has also approved the introduction of new Regulations-2025, which will replace the previous guidelines issued in 2014. These regulations aim to streamline and modernize teacher education, aligning with the vision of the NEP 2020.
Future Roadmap
The reforms reflect a significant shift in the structure of teacher education in India. By offering shorter and more specialized courses, the government aims to prepare future educators who are well-equipped to meet the demands of modern classrooms.
With the gradual phasing out of the two-year program and the implementation of the integrated and one-year courses, the focus remains on quality education and skill-based teacher training.
