Prayagraj: Prof Shyam Bihari Agrawal, a former teaching faculty member of Allahabad University and a distinguished artist, writer, and educator, has been chosen for the prestigious Padma Shri Award 2025 in the field of Arts. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh's cultural city of Prayagraj, Prof Agrawal’s selection is a historic moment, marking the first time a painter artist from the state has received this honor.
A Legacy in Arts and Education
After completing a five-year postgraduate diploma from the Government College of Art and Craft, Calcutta, Prof Agrawal began his teaching journey on January 4, 1968, as a lecturer in the Department of Painting, Allahabad University. He followed in the footsteps of his art guru, Kshitindra Nath Majumdar, and contributed significantly to the academic and cultural fabric of the institution.
In 1979, he was awarded a D.Phil degree for his dissertation, “Bharatiya Chitrakala Mein Reetikaleen Sahitya ki Abivyakti,” which explored the interplay of classical Indian art and literature. His 35-year-long teaching tenure at Allahabad University was marked by excellence, culminating in his felicitation on Teachers’ Day in 2003 for his outstanding contributions to the institution and its students.
Expanding Horizons Post-Retirement
After retiring in 2003, Prof Agrawal joined Prayag Sangeet Samiti as Dean and founded the Faculty of Visual Arts. He also served as a visiting professor at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh, Jharkhand. Prof Agrawal’s expertise was sought across the nation, and he participated in numerous workshops and seminars organized by cultural centers, Lalit Kala Akademi, museums, and universities, leaving an indelible mark on the arts community.
Active Contributions to the Arts
As a member of the State Academy of Fine Arts, Lucknow, Prof Agrawal actively worked to uplift budding artists. During his tenure, he edited Kala Trimasik, a quarterly publication of the academy, and authored a monograph on Saint Painter Kshitindra Nath Majumdar. His research contributions continue to this day, with nominations to academic and research committees of various universities.
International Recognition and Personal Achievements
Prof Agrawal has been honored by institutions such as Mahatma Gandhi Chitrakoot Gramodaya University and Kanpur University for his exceptional artistic work, including recognition at international art camps.
