The Executive Council (EC) of the University of Delhi (DU) has announced significant decisions impacting PhD admissions, postgraduate programs, and the establishment of scholarships and awards during its recent meeting.
The EC has decided to include UGC NET scores from both June 2024 and December 2024 for admissions in the second phase of the PhD admission cycle for the academic session 2024-25. Preference will be given to candidates who qualify for NET along with JRF. Additionally, the EC approved a 20-25% increase in PhD seats compared to the previous admission round, enhancing opportunities for research aspirants.
In alignment with undergraduate admission policies, DU has passed a resolution to reserve one additional
seat in each postgraduate program for single girl child students under an additional quota. This initiative aims to promote higher education among women.
The EC also approved revised norms for donations to institute scholarships, awards, and capital assets. Scholarships can now be established by government entities, trusts, corporate houses, PSUs, NGOs, international organizations, and individuals. The minimum donation required for establishing a scholarship will be ₹5 lakh for a 10-year period or ₹10 lakh for 20 years. Additionally, 2% of the total amount will be allocated to the DU Endowment Fund upon establishment. A committee formed by the Vice Chancellor will oversee the approval of scholarships.
Similarly, awards can also be established by the same entities and individuals, with the same minimum donation criteria. However, awards cannot be established for a period exceeding 20 years. These decisions reflect DU’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and fostering a supportive ecosystem for students and researchers.
The University of Delhi has decided to use the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) scores of the last June session and December session for admission to its PhD programmes, in the second phase. DU is also going to increase PhD seats by 20 to 25 per cent, the university decided in a meeting.
Candidates who have passed the exam for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) will be given preference in DU PhD admissions. Last year, the central university announced its decision to use UGC NET scores for PhD admissions , giving 70% weightage to the exam. The move came after the UGC gave green light to the higher education institutions to admit students to PhD courses through NET.
