About the Opportunity

The international webinar on Gender-based Violence During and Post-apartheid: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission will explore how apartheid, a regime built on systemic racial segregation, also perpetuated gender-based violence, disproportionately affecting women and marginalized communities. Professor Zucca will shed light on the TRC’s work in post-apartheid South Africa, its successes, and the challenges it faced in reconciling the atrocities of the past, especially those related to gender violence.

This webinar is an invaluable opportunity for students, legal professionals, and human rights enthusiasts to deepen their understanding of how transitional justice mechanisms like the TRC contribute to healing and justice in post-conflict societies.

The talk will be based on transcripts, poems and critical readings from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up to repair, rehabilitate and amend the wrongs of Apartheid. The TLC was the first of its kind at the time, since then other countries have followed in South Africa’s footsteps to try to apologize for crimes committed against humanity.
