Overview of the National AIDS Control Programme and Internship Opportunity

The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP), initiated in 1992, is a comprehensive initiative managed by the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India. This programme aims to prevent and control HIV/AIDS through a range of strategies. Over the years, the focus has evolved from merely raising awareness to fostering behaviour change, moving from a centralized approach to a more decentralized model that emphasizes the involvement of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and networks of People Living with HIV (PLHIV). Core components of the NACP include prevention services, testing for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and providing care, support, and treatment services.

Internship Opportunities at NACO

The NACO Internship Programme is open to students pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, M.Phil, and PhD courses across various disciplines, as outlined in Annexure II. This initiative is designed to engage students from recognized and reputable universities in meaningful work related to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply for the internship, candidates must meet certain essential criteria. They should either be enrolled in a graduate program at a recognized university with at least two years of study completed or be engaged in a regular postgraduate degree or diploma program. While not mandatory, candidates from institutions that have collaborations with NACO or State AIDS Control Societies (SACS) are encouraged to apply. Additionally, M.Phil and PhD candidates must secure approval from their respective institutions prior to application.

Documents Required for Joining

Upon acceptance into the internship, selected candidates must submit several documents, including:

  • Two recent photographs
  • A valid photo identity (such as a Voter ID, Aadhaar, or Passport)
  • An approval letter from the Dean, Principal, or Head of the Department
  • For international students, valid travel documents and an approval letter from their institutions are also necessary.

Stipend Details

Interns will receive a stipend of Rs. 8,000 per month, payable upon successful completion of the internship and the acceptance of their reports by the NACO Reporting Officer. It is important to note that no additional expenses, such as travel costs, will be reimbursed. The stipend will only be provided if the intern demonstrates satisfactory performance, as certified by their Head of Department. Those who discontinue the internship will not be entitled to any remuneration.
