ACTA General Assembly Expresses Concerns Over Postgraduate Seat Reduction in Constituent Colleges

Meeting chaired by Dr. Umesh Pratap Singh highlights key issues faced by affiliated institutions

Allahabad University Constituent College Teachers' Association (ACTA) Meets to Discuss Long-Pending Issues

The Allahabad University Constituent College Teachers' Association (ACTA) held its general assembly meeting on Wednesday at CMP Degree College under the chairmanship of ACTA President Dr. Umesh Pratap Singh. Members deliberated on various long-standing issues related to constituent colleges and expressed concerns about the lack of action from the university despite multiple communications.

Reduction of Postgraduate Seats Causes Alarm

A major issue raised during the meeting was the significant reduction of nearly 2,000 seats in postgraduate programs across 10 constituent colleges. Several members voiced strong opposition to the university's decision to phase out these classes, calling it discriminatory and arbitrary, especially given that the university provides no financial assistance to these colleges.

Plans to Escalate the Matter if Necessary

The members unanimously resolved that if needed, the issue would be taken up at higher levels, including in Parliament and through public protests. Initially, efforts will be made to engage in dialogue with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sangeeta Srivastava. However, the members expressed frustration over the failure to secure a meeting with her despite repeated requests for an appointment. If no resolution is reached, further strategies will be devised.

Concerns Over Interpretation of Rules

Some members accused certain retired teachers of creating confusion by misinterpreting rules and regulations. They also raised the demand that teachers qualified in subjects where Ph.D. programs have not yet been approved should be allowed to supervise Ph.D. students.

Eligibility Date for Professorship Promotions Remains Undecided

The assembly also addressed the delay in determining the date of eligibility for promotions to the rank of professor, despite some teachers having already been promoted. Members urged the university to expedite the process as per UGC guidelines. Concerns over inadequate health check-up facilities and poor hospital services were also raised during the meeting.

ACTA Treasurer Presents Financial Report

ACTA Treasurer Dr. Harish Chandra Yadav presented the actual budget for 2023-24 and proposed the budget for 2024-25.

The meeting was conducted by General Secretary Prof. Santosh Kumar Srivastava, with a vote of thanks delivered by Vice-President Dr. Akhilesh Tripathi. Other attendees included Joint Secretary Dr. Ashish Tripathi, former ACTA President Prof. Surendra Pal Singh, Prof. Dinanath, Prof. Anand Kumar, and several others.
