Responsibilities and Expectations

The role of an Assistant Professor at NLSIU is multifaceted, involving both teaching and administrative responsibilities. Key duties include:


1. Teaching Responsibilities:  

   Assistant Professors are expected to provide an average of six hours of undergraduate and/or graduate class teaching per week, averaged across three twelve-week teaching terms throughout the year. In addition to classroom teaching, professors are required to design and deliver lectures, prepare course materials, reading lists, and lecture notes for students. The role also involves teaching in the university’s Professional and Continuing Education department, which extends beyond traditional degree programs.

   

2. Student Assessment:  

   Faculty members are responsible for providing feedback on students’ work and supporting their academic progress through structured feedback mechanisms. Assistant Professors are also expected to liaise with other faculty members to ensure cohesive teaching efforts in subjects where multiple instructors are involved.

3. Research and Academic Contributions:  

   Candidates will need to engage in ongoing research in their subject areas, contributing to the intellectual life of the university. They should also demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence, whether through publications or active participation in academic conferences.


4. Administrative Duties:  

   As part of their role, Assistant Professors will undertake a share of the faculty's administrative responsibilities, such as serving on committees and contributing to the governance of the university. This is dependent on the candidate’s career stage and experience.


Essential and Desirable Qualifications

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must hold a master’s degree with at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade under any grading system used. Moreover, the candidates should possess strong communication, interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills, which are necessary to offer both academic and pastoral support to students from diverse backgrounds.

NLSIU encourages applications from individuals with a record of published research in high-quality academic journals. Candidates who have demonstrated academic excellence in their university education and possess skills relevant to higher education teaching and research will be preferred. Additionally, the institution is looking for candidates who show a clear commitment to furthering the goals and objectives of the university.

- A sample of written work, which may be published or unpublished. If co-authored, the applicant must clearly identify this. In cases where the written work exceeds 20,000 words, candidates should indicate which sections they wish to highlight for the selection committee.

- Details of two references, who can provide an assessment of the candidate’s academic and professional qualifications.
