First M.K. Nambyar Memorial Essay Competition Announced by M.K. Nambyar SAARC Law Centre at NALSAR University

The M.K. Nambyar SAARC Law Centre for Advanced Legal Studies at NALSAR University of Law has announced the launch of the First M.K. Nambyar Memorial Essay Competition. This prestigious competition marks the revival of the M.K. Nambyar SAARC Law Centre, a leading academic hub for constitutional and comparative law studies in South Asia. The Centre, established in 2003 under the patronage of Senior Advocate Mr. K.K. Venugopal, aims to promote rigorous academic research, writing, and deliberation on constitutional law and other legal issues affecting South Asian nations.

The Centre was recently rejuvenated with the appointment of Retired Justice S. Ravindra Bhat as the Chair of Comparative Constitutional Law Studies, and this essay competition is the Centre's first major event for the current academic year.

Essay Topics and Competition Details

The essay competition invites LL.B. and B.A. LL.B. students to submit their work on one of the following two timely and important topics:

1. Redrawing Constituencies: Delimitation and Constitutionalism

2. Defining ‘Forests’: Balancing Environmental Conservation with Sustainable Development

Participants are expected to approach these topics with innovative and diverse perspectives. They are encouraged to focus on any specific aspect of the broad themes provided, allowing for in-depth exploration and critical analysis. The Centre particularly welcomes comparative legal analyses that examine South Asian legal systems and their approaches to these issues.

Eligibility Criteria and Essay Submission Guidelines

The competition is open to students who are in Year III and above in all five-year LL.B. programmes, and Year II and above in all three-year LL.B. programmes. Students must choose one of the two topics provided and submit an original essay that meets the following requirements:

- Word limit: Maximum 3000 words, excluding footnotes.

- Footnotes: The use of talking footnotes, or footnotes with substantive statements, is strongly discouraged. All sources must be properly cited using footnotes.

- Plagiarism: Any form of plagiarism will result in disqualification. Furthermore, the use of generative AI tools for essay writing is strictly prohibited and will lead to immediate disqualification.

Submissions must be in both PDF and Docx formats and sent via email to mknambyarcentre@nalsar.ac.in with the subject line "Essay Competition 2024." The deadline for submission is midnight on 15 October 2024. Participants must also include the word count of their essay in the submission email.

Late submissions or requests for extensions will not be entertained under any circumstances. This firm deadline ensures the competition maintains its integrity and fairness for all participants.

Prizes and Internship Opportunities

The competition offers substantial cash prizes for the top three essays:

1. First Prize: ₹50,000

2. Second Prize: ₹35,000

3. Third Prize: ₹20,000

In addition to the cash prizes, the winners will also be awarded coveted internships at the chambers of Senior Advocates practicing at the Supreme Court of India. These internships offer a rare opportunity for law students to gain hands-on experience in some of the country's most respected legal chambers, providing them with insights into the workings of India's highest court and enhancing their legal careers.

Winners will be informed of their internship placements once the results are declared, and they will have the flexibility to choose an internship period of four weeks during a semester break of their choice. However, the final timeline will be subject to any contingencies or requirements that may arise at the chambers where the students are placed.

Results and Publication

The results of the competition will be announced by 15 December 2024, and the winners will be notified via email. Additionally, the winning essays will be published on the official website of the M.K. Nambyar SAARC Law Centre, offering the winners a platform to showcase their academic and legal writing to a wider audience.

This recognition will not only enhance the professional profiles of the winners but also contribute to the broader discourse on constitutional law and related issues within the South Asian context.
