UGC: NCC will be included as an optional subject in universities, UGC issued guidelines

The University Grant Commission (UGC) has released a notification regarding the inclusion of NCC as a subject in the course modules at universities. The higher education institutions (HEIs) have been directed to take appropriate measures to include the subject in the curriculum. The students will be given the option to choose NCC as an elective subject.

The main aim of including the NCC in the curriculum is to affiliate students with the NCC troops. The Director General of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) has pointed out that HEIS must have affiliations with NCC troops to offer NCC as an elective subject.

The UGC notification has revealed that NCC can be offered as an elective subject only to those students who have enrolled as NCC cadets. The government has allowed students to take up NCC as an optional subject since 2021. The government aimed for this move to benefit cadets, including those from the border areas where additional cadet strength has been authorised as part of the overall Border Areas Expansion Plan. This move will also encourage the youth to help and contribute towards nation-building.

Students studying in colleges can now choose NCC as an optional subject. For this, they will have to enroll as NCC cadets. In this way, they will be able to study along with NCC training and they will also get academic credit for it. After completing NCC training, they will also be given NCC B and C certificates, which will help them in getting a job.

UGC issued guidelines

UGC has issued guidelines to all universities and colleges regarding inclusion of NCC as an optional subject. UGC has said that to keep National Cadet Corps (NCC) as an optional subject, it will be necessary for the student to be a part of NCC. Optional subject can be given only to those students who are enrolled as NCC cadets or will join NCC.

Universities and colleges have been asked to pay attention to this subject and make students aware. NCC has developed a standard and universally applicable common elective credit syllabus in line with the New Education Policy 2020. Enrolled students will get the benefit of earning academic credit scores for their NCC training and obtaining NCC B and C certificates.

More details regarding the credit framework and elective subjects are available on the UGC website.
