Flexible Education: Lucknow University New Multiple Entry Initiative Under NEP 2020

LU First in Country to Offer Multiple Entry Option

Lucknow University (LU) is set to become the first state university in India to provide students with the option of multiple entries under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, starting from the academic session 2024-25.

LU had already implemented the NEP in undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses in 2021, which allowed students the flexibility to exit a course at any time with a relevant diploma, advanced diploma, degree, or honors degree. Now, the university is finalizing the provisions for students to re-enter (multiple entries) either the same program or a different program at a later time. To this end, LU has established a nine-member committee.

The NEP 2020 aims to provide flexibility and academic freedom to students, enabling them to exit a program with a relevant certificate, diploma, or degree and re-enter the same or a different program later. This new multiple entry and exit system, already adopted by premier institutes like IIT-Delhi, will allow students to resume their education from where they left off.

"After giving students the flexibility to exit a course, we are now ready to offer them the option of multiple entries. This means they can enroll in any year and continue their education from where they left," stated Vice Chancellor Prof. Alok Kumar Rai.

Enhancing Academic Freedom and Flexibility for Students

"NE provides flexibility and academic freedom to students. It lets students exit a programme any time with a relevant certificate, diploma, or degree and re-enter the same or a different programme later. Hence, after giving students flexibility to exit a course, we are also now ready to give them the option of multiple entries, which means they can enrol in any year and continue the education from where they left," said VC Prof Alok Kumar Rai.

Listing the merits of giving students the option of multiple entries and multiple exits, like IIT-Delhi and other premier institutes in the country, LU vice chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai said that the move will give them an academic freedom.

Students Can Re-enter Programs Anytime

As part of NEP 2020, a student can now enrol in any year and continue the education from where they have left, Rai said.

“There are occasions when students have to leave their education midway for various reasons and are not allowed to pursue it in other institutes. These rigid academic boundaries will be removed with multiple entry options and will ensure zero year-loss to students in the event of exiting midway. It will reduce the drop-out rate, thus improving the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER), which is one of themajor objectives of NEP,” he added.

The committee, including dean academics, Prof Geetanjali Mishra, will decide the modalities of multiple entries, he added.

Prof Mishra said, “We have received applications from six students who want to avail the multiple entries option under NEP at LU. For example, there is a female student enrolled in Miranda House, Delhi University, who doesn’t want to continue her education in Delhi and wants to return to Lucknow and has requested for this option.”

Multiple Exit Options: Certificate, Diploma, Degree, and Honors Degree

Prof Mishra said every year in almost every course there are some vacant seatsas students leave a course midway after they get selected in some examination or due to othe reasons. “On such vacant seats, students who avail of the multiple-entry option will be given admission based on merit. For example, if there is one seat and 10 contenders, we will give admission to one with the best academic records,” she added.

Addressing Vacant Seats with Merit-Based Admissions

She said LU presently offers multiple exit options to students under which on exiting the course after one year of study, a student is awarded a certificate, after two years a diploma, after three years a degree and after four years an honours degree with research.
