After the UGC-NET Paper Leak, will there be a separate entrance exam for PhD? DU cleared the confusion

After the UGC NET paper leak, there was confusion about a separate entrance exam for PhD in DU. However, the Vice Chancellor has cleared all the confusion. He has told that Delhi University has no plans to conduct a separate entrance exam for PhD. In fact, after the cancellation of UGC NET exam by the Center, uncertainty had arisen regarding PhD admission which was necessary for admission in PhD course. DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said, we have no plans to conduct a separate in-house PhD entrance exam. We will follow whatever suggestion the UGC gives. We have not received any information from NTA and we are waiting for their order. As far as we think, the academic session for PhD may be delayed by a month.

UGC-NET fiasco 2024: No plans for separate PhD entrance exams, says DU Vice Chancellor

Actually he was asked whether DU has planned to conduct an in-house entrance exam after the controversy over NTA's UGC NET exam. In a conversation with news agency ANI, he clearly denied any such possibility. Let us tell you, after the Home Ministry expressed concern about the integrity of the exam, the Center canceled the exam to be held on June 19. On the other hand, JNU is considering organizing an in-house entrance exam in this matter.

What did JNU say?

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association on Thursday claimed that the university is considering the possibility of restoring JNU's old system of conducting its own entrance exam for PhD admissions without UGC NET scores. JNU Vice Chancellor Shantishri D Pandit, however, said no decision has been taken in this regard yet and the administration has only invited suggestions from stakeholders.

He told, "It is too early to assume that JNU is going to do away with UGC NET marks for PhD admissions. We have only taken suggestions from stakeholders as the National Testing Agency (NTA) will take some time to declare the entrance exam results and due to this our PhD admissions are getting delayed. Fellowships of our JRF students are also stuck due to this reason." He said, "Still, some logistical issues have to be considered to implement the old admission system and it is a time-consuming process. We have not taken any decision yet. If we do so in future, it will be informed on the university website."

Why was the exam cancelled?

Let us tell you, the Ministry of Education had cancelled the UGC-NET exam on June 18, a night before the scheduled date, because it received information that the sanctity of the exam had been compromised. Now the fresh UGC-NET exam will be conducted from August 21 to September 4, which means that it will take more time for the results to be declared.

The UGC NET, conducted by the NTA in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode since December 2018, determines eligibility for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. The award of JRF or eligibility for Assistant Professorship depends on the aggregate performance in Paper-I and Paper-II of the UGC NET.
