IGNOU Introduces Certificate Programme in Fashion Design

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will offer a new certificate programme in fashion design. The new programme will be offered by IGNOU’s School of Vocational Education and Training. It aims at preparing students for employability in the apparel industry, an IGNOU statement said.

Eligibility Criteria

Medium of Instruction

Duration of Certificate Course

A student who has qualified Class 12 will be eligible to apply. The medium of instruction will be in English or Hindi. The certificate course can be completed between a period of six months and two years’ duration.

Textile Export and Job Creation Goals

The Government of India aims to achieve $300 billion of textile exports by 2024-25 and create an additional 35 million job in the textile sector, the university said adding that it is not possible to achieve the said target through the existing formal training system.

It becomes necessary to adopt an exceptional pedagogical approach like blending learning for delivery of the programme as per industry needs, IGNOU added.

It will develop basic knowledge and skills in pattern making and sewing techniques. The programme seeks to develop basic knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of fashion design, understanding of the fashion industry in India and across the globe; impart fundamental knowledge of textiles, impart skills in digital technology in CAD, develop knowledge and understanding of pattern making skills and sewing techniques; and develop entrepreneurship and communication skills.
