The registration process for the Post Graduation Admission Test (PGAT) at the University of Allahabad has been successfully completed. The university has announced the dates for the entrance examinations, which will take place from July 1 to July 4. Among the various courses offered, LLB remains one of the most popular, attracting over 10,000 applications annually. The University of Allahabad is renowned for its LLB program, which consistently produces excellent results, making it a sought-after course among students.
This year, the Bar Council of India has significantly reduced the number of seats available for LLB admissions. The number of seats has been cut from 375 to 300 for the
Main Campus and its constituent colleges—
Chaudhary Mahadeo Prasad Degree College (CMP) and
Allahabad Degree College (ADC).
This reduction brings the total number of LLB seats at Allahabad University to 900. The decrease in available seats is a significant setback for the 11,472 students who have registered for the LLB entrance examination this year, drastically reducing their chances of securing admission.

Historical Overview of the Law Department at Allahabad University
With the establishment of the High Court at Allahabad in 1866, there was a need for advocates to practice in the High Court and District Courts. Initially, becoming an advocate required a Barrister's qualification from England or a Bachelor of Laws degree after graduation from Calcutta University. In response, Muir Central College of Allahabad began offering law courses in 1872. When Allahabad University was established in 1887, the Law Department gained prominence. By 1890, Hon'ble Justice D. Straight became the first President of the Law Department. Over the years, the department evolved, receiving full-time faculty in 1936, and moving to a new building in the 1980s due to space constraints. The department has produced notable legal personalities such as Sir Tej Bahadur Sapru, Dr. Kailash Nath Katju, and Justice Wali Ullah.
Recently, the Law Department has achieved remarkable success in the PCS J (Provincial Civil Service-Judicial) examination, with more than 80 students securing selection last year, underscoring the department's excellence in legal education and training.
