"Division Bench Orders Salary Refunds for Unlawfully Recruited Teachers in WBSSC Case"
During the hearing, a division bench comprising Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi mandated that teachers recruited unlawfully (with blank OMR sheets) must refund their salaries within four weeks, with the district magistrate entrusted with collecting the funds. The annulled recruitment panel encompasses all appointments of teaching and non-teaching staff, selected through the WBSSC entrance examination in 2016, for various state-government-sponsored and aided schools in Bengal.
Furthermore, the bench ordered the reassessment of around 23 lakh OMR sheets from the recruitment entrance exam. Despite requests from some appellants for a stay on the order, the bench declined and instructed the CBI to conduct further investigation into the appointment process, with a report due in three months.
"Massive Turnout in 2016 SLST Prompts Fresh Appointment Process by WBSSC"
The WBSSC has been instructed to initiate a fresh appointment process. Over 23 lakh candidates participated in the 2016 State Level Selection Test (SLST) conducted by the WBSSC for over 24,000 vacant positions.
Upon hearing the verdict, hundreds of job aspirants gathered outside the court premises rejoiced. The High Court concluded the case's hearing on March 20, with the judgment reserved by the division bench. The CBI began probing the case following an earlier court order, which led to the arrest of former Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in 2022 for his alleged involvement in the scam.
